Financing Electric Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicles in India
Scaling India’s transition to electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks (e-MHDTs) hinges on unlocking structured, risk-mitigated financing pathways. This conference proceeding captures insights from financial institutions and sector experts on mechanisms required to align capital deployment for e-MHDTs.
WRI India hosted an online convening on November 6, 2025, to deliberate on financing pathways for electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks (e-MHDTs). The discussion examined barriers to capital deployment, including high upfront costs, residual value uncertainty, and the absence of standardized underwriting frameworks.
Expanding affordable and structured financing will be central not only to scaling e-MHDT adoption but also to enabling lenders to participate in the projected $250 billion EV market by 2030. Against this backdrop, WRI India engaged extensively with key financial institutions, think tanks, and sector-focused lenders to inform the development of a financing blueprint to anchor India’s freight electrification transition.
The proposed blueprint analyzes concessional loans, credit guarantees, leasing models, residual value guarantees, and retail loans, complemented by subsidies, grants, and equity. The blueprint outlines a phased pathway from early-stage risk absorption to mainstream, market-based financing structures, to enable sustainable capital mobilization for e-MHDTs.
