Creating Holistic and Skilled Enterprises for a Smooth and Just Transition to Electric Vehicles
A Summary of Expert Perspectives
by , e -Maharashtra’s automotive industry, dominated by internal combustion engine vehicles, is gearing up for a shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). As a key state in India’s auto manufacturing landscape, contributing to the employment of nearly 3.4 lakh people, it’s imperative for Maharashtra to ensure an inclusive EV transition.
This conference proceeding summarizes the key requirements of local automotive enterprises in their transition to EVs, based on workshops conducted in three major automotive clusters in Maharashtra: Pune, Nashik, and Kolhapur. It provides insights into cluster-specific strengths, potential diversification strategies, skill training, the development of innovation hubs, financing mechanisms, and policy interventions for an equitable transition. It also highlights the challenges and opportunities that this shift presents to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). To remain competitive in the evolving EV supply chain, MSMEs will need to upgrade infrastructure, adopt new technologies, and reskill their workforce. They can also explore new opportunities in EV component manufacturing. Addressing gaps in financing, technology access, and workforce development will be crucial for ensuring a smooth transition to electric mobility for MSMEs.
