India’s NDC Targets and Milestones for Key Sectors
These conference proceedings capture key insights from participatory modelling workshops on India’s evolving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Bringing together diverse stakeholders, the workshops explored sectoral pathways, policy levers, and milestones to support India’s long-term low-carbon development and climate resilience goals.
Drawing on discussions from two multi-stakeholder workshops held in New Delhi and Bengaluru, this document synthesises insights on advancing India’s NDC targets across key sectors—energy and industry, buildings and urban systems, agriculture and land use (AFOLU), and adaptation. Using systems mapping and scenario modelling approaches, participants identified critical policy levers, cross-sectoral interdependencies, and potential milestones aligned with India’s long-term decarbonisation strategy.
The proceedings highlight the need to shift towards generation-based renewable targets, accelerate grid decarbonisation, scale electrification across sectors, and strengthen sustainable agricultural practices. They also underscore the importance of finance, governance, and institutional capacity in enabling implementation. While quantitative targets were explored for mitigation sectors, participants emphasised flexible, context-specific approaches for adaptation. Overall, the workshops demonstrate how participatory processes can support more grounded, inclusive, and actionable climate policy design.
