India Just Transition Summit: Navigating a people-centered low carbon transition in India
India’s vision to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047 along with a rapidly rising population necessitates creating millions of jobs to support an expanding workforce. However, this needs to be complemented with transformative low-carbon strategies to achieve India’s goal of net zero emissions by 2070. Several studies have shown that India's low-carbon transition can create significant economic and employment gains, along with fostering innovation, creating new business opportunities, attracting higher investment flows, and reducing energy and operational costs. However, this transition can also impact the livelihoods of stakeholders engaged in fossil fuel value chains (coal mining, oil and gas exploration, etc.) and fossil fuel-dependent sectors (automotive, textiles, etc.). To leverage the opportunities that the low-carbon transition can offer without exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and creating new challenges, it is crucial to plan for the transition in a just, inclusive, and socially equitable manner. This requires research, deliberation, dialogue, and experience sharing across stakeholder groups including government, affected communities, workers, women, civil society groups, and experts.
The India Just Transition Summit organized by WRI India, along with Just Transition Research Centre, IIT Kanpur, is a two-day Summit that will serve as a conference and research symposium bringing together thought-leaders, policymakers, researchers, civil society, and community representatives to explore diverse perspectives and inclusive strategies towards a people-centered low-carbon transition in India.
During the two days, the Summit will-
➡ Bring forth research and voices from across the country on the different dimensions of just transition in the Indian context
➡ Create a platform to advance the collective thinking around solutions and interventions needed to ensure people-centered, inclusive, and equitable low-carbon growth for India
