Launch of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) EValuator

Pollution in Indian cities has earned global notoriety. 14 out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India and vehicular emissions contribute to a large share of this pollution.

Here is the full recording of the event.

While the need for improved air quality makes a strong case for the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs), another concern is India’s dependence on oil imports for transportation fuel needs. This import dependence is impacted by constant price fluctuations in international crude oil market thereby adversely impacting the country’s energy security.

A shift to electric mobility brings multiple advantages such as improved air quality, reduced dependence on imported fuel, reduced emission of greenhouse gases, improved plant load factor for the electricity grid, and the opportunity to be a leader in a rapidly growing global market.

A key barrier to EV adoption, in India’s price-sensitive automobile market, is the high capital cost that dominates an EV's otherwise lower operating costs. A more accurate assessment of the economic efficiency of an EV is gained by looking at owning and operating an EV through the lens of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

  • Factors to consider while making a transition to electric vehicles such as fuel, infra, pollution, etc.
  • How can the TCO EValuator be used by various type of operators – fleet operator, public agency, individual owner in making decisions pertaining to procurement model, terms and conditions like deployment life of vehicle, owning and sharing risks, etc.
  • What are some of the sensitive components while purchasing electric vehicles. How can the TCO EValuator help in identifying those pain points as well as factors favoring electric vehicle ownership?
  • Have Government subsidies achieved the set objectives? Have incentives on capital cost proven to be the way forward for achieving the transition to clean energy? How can insights from TCO EValuator answer these questions?

About the TCO EValuator

  • The TCO EValuator has been designed in Excel to take into account the various cost components and usage details of a vehicle during the period of utilization and provides you with a TCO/ km for acquiring and using the vehicle.
  • Users will be able to input their figures on capital and operations costs in the sheet (in various currencies and measurement systems) to determine the effect of various components on the TCO of a vehicle.
