Towards Net-Zero Energy Healthcare Facilities in Northeast India

Towards Net-Zero Energy Healthcare Facilities in Northeast India

India's healthcare sector is one of the largest and most energy-intensive sectors, consuming approximately 9.7 TWh annually, equivalent to 9 percent of India's commercial electricity consumption. This consumption results in the release of 7.7 million tons of Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually (National Centre for Disease Control, 2023).

It is therefore imperative for healthcare facilities to adopt innovative strategies to control energy expenses and meet both regulatory requirements and sustainability goals. Healthcare facilities across the spectrum – public, private and charitable hospitals – and ranging in size from rural sub-centers to advanced multi-specialty hospitals, present both unique challenges and opportunities in transitioning towards climate-smart, net-zero energy healthcare facilities.

Healthcare administrators, for instance, are increasingly confronted with escalating energy costs, complicating the task of managing facility operating budgets. Ensuring optimal patient care, comfort and safety while managing energy consumption remains a key priority.

On the other hand, there is growing awareness and resulting demand for energy-efficient, low-carbon buildings, which aligns with the increasing expectations from both the public and various sectors regarding their environmental, social, and governance performance.

This event brings together healthcare, energy and development sector experts to:

  • Identify actionable pathways to reduce GHG emissions in healthcare facilities.
  • Showcase innovative solutions on integrating energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other demand-side solutions.
  • Mobilize cross-sectoral collaboration to achieve India's climate and sustainability goals.
