Stakeholder Consultation: Drafting Kerala’s Cool Roof Policy

Kerala has been experiencing increasingly erratic weather, particularly during the scorching summer months. This rise in temperature is driving higher cooling demands, which in turn leads to greater energy consumption. To address this growing need for cooling while minimizing energy use, passive cooling solutions for the building sector have become essential. These techniques eighter can provide thermal comfort without energy consumption or significantly reduce the cooling load. One such effective solution is cool roofing, which helps lower indoor temperatures by reflecting heat from the roof or reducing heat ingress. Techniques such as reflective paints, insulation materials, and green roofs are widely recognized as cool roof strategies.

WRI India is collaborating with the Energy Management Centre-Kerala, the state's nodal agency for promoting energy efficiency, to draft a cool roof policy aimed at raising awareness and encouraging the widespread adoption of cool roofs in Kerala. In this regard, WRI India and the Energy Management Centre are organizing a stakeholder convening to gather inputs and feedback on the policy framework and its implementation. This engagement will bring together key stakeholders from government, academia, technology providers, and industry experts to ensure a comprehensive approach to develop a cool roof policy for the state.
