Impact of COVID-19 on Sustainable Fashion in India

The COVID-19 crisis has compelled us to introspect on our way of life and on the nature of economic growth. Can our consumption choices be less wasteful? Can production processes be less extractive?

World Resources Institute (WRI) and Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have been investigating such questions with the fashion & apparel industry in the US, UK and India. Our circular fashion initiative – Clothing Reuse Market Makers – aims to contribute to a shift away from linear “take-make-dispose” business models towards “circular” business models that fulfil consumer needs with fewer resources. As part of this project, we have prepared guidance for brands to assess the social and environmental impact of clothing reuse business models.

This webinar, hosted by WRI India and the Circular Apparel Innovation Factory (CAIF), will present this guidance and discuss the new challenges thrown up by the COVID-19 crisis:

  • How has the COVID-19 crisis affected the fashion and apparel industry in India?
  • What are the likely shifts in consumption patterns through traditional and re-use business models?
  • How will this crisis affect brand commitments towards the shift to circular fashion?
  • Can industry supply chains be made more resilient to future shocks?
  • Will economic recovery efforts continue to lock us into the same extractive growth model or can we build back better?
