Cooling the Future: A Showcase of Sustainable Cooling Technologies for Kerala

Global warming is contributing to a rise in temperatures and extreme summer heat. The year 2023 has been recognized as the hottest year on record. Kerala too has witnessed, extreme summer heat in 2023 and continues to reel under heat stress this year. The warm and humid climate in several parts of the state further enhance thermal discomfort during hot days.

These factors are significantly increasing the demand for cooling. As most cooling technologies rely on energy-intensive refrigeration-based systems, the rise in cooling demand is also expected to significantly increase electricity consumption and consequently greenhouse gas emissions as well. It is imperative for us to rely on sustainable alternatives to address the challenge of cooling in the context of transition towards clean energy and reduce the need for high Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants. Innovations in technologies are also needed for meeting the goal of thermal comfort for all, as envisioned in the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP).

In this context, WRI India and the Energy Management Centre (EMC), State Designated Agency for energy efficiency in Kerala, have partnered to organize an exhibition of sustainable cooling technologies.

The exhibition will showcase innovative technologies in sustainable cooling for example Cool roof solutions, Radiant cooling, Solar hybrid cooling, innovative building materials, and several others.
