This practice note documents the planning and implementation of WRI India’s landscape restoration pilot across 13 villages in Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh, from March 2021 to March 2025. It examines how a participatory, integrated landscape approach brought together communities, government departments, civil society and private partners to address land degradation and strengthen rural livelihoods.

The note highlights key enablers, including convergence of public schemes and corporate social responsibility funding, multi-level governance, targeted capacity-building, participatory monitoring and restoration-linked value chains. It also documents the ecological and socioeconomic benefits of interventions related to soil and water conservation, tree-based restoration and sustainable agriculture. Drawing on project documentation and field-based insights, the practice note identifies implementation challenges and lessons for scaling community-led restoration, with a focus on institutional coordination, sustained community ownership, diversified financing and integration with existing development priorities.
