The India–UK Conference on Green Hydrogen Standards and Safety Protocols brought together government, regulators, industry, standards bodies and technical experts to strengthen safety frameworks for India’s emerging green hydrogen economy. The discussions highlighted that while green hydrogen can help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, refining, fertilisers, shipping, aviation and heavy-duty transport, its scale-up depends on robust safety systems, harmonised standards, testing infrastructure and regulatory clarity. Speakers emphasised the need to move beyond documentation towards practical capacity-building across the value chain, from engineers to first responders. The conference also underlined the importance of risk-informed approaches, including quantitative risk assessment, digital twins, incident databases and India-specific testing facilities. A key message was that credible safety and certification frameworks are essential to build investor confidence and create bankable hydrogen markets.
