Long-term emissions scenarios for India's energy power sector: An analysis using the India Energy Policy Simulator

India’s commitment to achieving 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030 reflects its ambitious vision under the Paris Agreement. However, coal is projected to remain a dominant energy source, contributing over half of the electricity generation in 2030. With electricity demand expected to quadruple by 2050, driven by increased electrification and green hydrogen uptake, transitioning to a low-carbon power sector is vital for achieving India’s net-zero emissions target by 2070.

This working paper uses the India Energy Policy Simulator to analyze three scenarios for the power sector through 2050: an Ambitious Policy (AP) scenario with deep decarbonization measures, a No New Policy (NNP) scenario with a continuation of existing policies, and a Renewable Energy Bottleneck (REB) scenario with constraints on renewable energy capacity growth
