Policy 2030: National level Investment Program for bus-based public transport systems

Policy 2030: National level Investment Program

Bus-based public transport systems are the most preferred mode for passenger transport in India. However, the available bus systems are inadequate to meet the travel needs of the growing population. There is a huge gap in the existing bus fleet and support infrastructure required to operate an efficient bus system. Furthermore, Indian bus agencies are unable to meet operational expenses using traditional revenue sources.

More about Policy 2030: National level Investment Program for bus-based public transport systems

Existing bus systems in India are not enough to keep up with the travel needs of its growing population. Despite being India’s most preferred mode of transport, public buses are unable to be truly efficient because of the huge gap in the existing bus fleet and the support infrastructure it requires. Additionally, the bus agencies are struggling to meet operational expenses from traditional revenue sources, and this will only become worse as the COVID-19 pandemic keeps commuters away from public modes of transport. There is an urgent need to direct focus and funding to strengthen bus-based public transport systems. As COVID-19 threatens to change the way public transport has been conducted, operators also need to formulate an effective plan to respond to the pandemic, keeping in mind the safety of passengers and staff.
