  • URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Water: Are we nearing Day Zero? | 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
Jupiter I

Rapid urbanization, climate change and conflict of water rights bring unprecedented challenges to water-scarce cities such as Bengaluru in relation to water security. Furthermore, most Indian cities manage water resources based on linear, engineering-based approaches, have inefficient infrastructure which has not evolved at the same pace of urban development. Finally, the degradation of natural infrastructure, water pollution, and lack of socio-political will further stress this finite resource. This panel will discuss whether we really are nearing ‘Day Zero’ in this era of widespread water risks and vulnerabilities. The discussion will also focus on what kind of paradigm shift from traditional water practices can help in securing reliable, safe and sustainable water supply for a thriving city like Bengaluru and thereby, averting any future ‘Day Zero’ situation.

Energy Efficiency: Enabling Low-Carbon Built Environments | 10:30 am to 12:00 pm
Jupiter II

Indian cities, including Bengaluru, add several new buildings every year, increasing existing building stock. Energy efficiency and renewable energy interventions for existing buildings can be limited by technologies and costs, but this cannot be ignored if we are to create a sustainable built environment in cities. This panel discussion will deliberate on policies and technologies for identifying and implementing clean energy options for existing buildings.

Developer’s Dialogue: Roadmap to the Townships and Campuses of the Future | 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm
Neptune

Research from Mckinsey (2009) reveals that over 5,000 acres of Bengaluru is being developed as gated communities located in the periphery, designed to be car-dependent, relying on backup diesel-fueled power, and purchasing private water. Within this backdrop, this panel will discuss how we can implement sectoral roadmaps for low-carbon development, that ensure, livability and sustainability in the new-growth areas are not compromised.

Conversations Over Coffee: Moving Bengaluru Forward | 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Jupiter II

Bengaluru is known as the hub of innovation in India. Technology has changed the way people live. With a click of a button, you can pay bills, or have food, groceries or just about anything delivered to your doorstep, or access transport, or schedule a doctor’s appointment, or even get someone to run an errand for you - all at a price, of course. And yet, we don’t often think about how these innovations impact the people on the ground who bring these services to us. What does the city need to do to on the one hand, allow these innovations to grow whilst also ensuring stability and sustainability for the artists, the health care providers, and the range of delivery personnel who silently move Bengaluru forward?
