Wind Energy Technology in Tamil Nadu: What the Future Holds
India’s transition to clean energy has largely been driven by the Renewable Energy (RE) sector. The total wind energy installed in India is close to 36.5 GW, fourth highest in world after China, US and Germany (March 2019).
Watch the full webinar here:
Globally, the offshore wind turbine installation as of 2019 stands at 29 GW. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) plans to ramp up energy production from offshore wind turbines to 5 GW by 2022 and 30 GW by 2030. An assessment by National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) in 2017 pegged the total potential of offshore wind capacity in India at 302 GW (at 100 meters above ground level), out of which nearly 35 GW is off the Tamil Nadu coast.
There are other encouraging signs for the future of wind power, in the form of research and development in innovative material for wind turbines, wind flow visualization, grid enhancement, emerging indigenous efforts and improvements in the technology readiness level. NIWE is currently working on a testing facility in Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu for assessing prototypes before venturing out into the sea.
The objective of this webinar is to enhance knowledge, gain valuable insights, disseminate new and innovative technologies and datasets within the wind energy community, and to strengthen co-development and collaboration across specializations to accelerate development in clean energy transaction in Tamil Nadu.
The panel of industry and government stakeholders will discuss the latest trends and developments in wind technology, challenges and opportunities lies ahead for Tamil Nadu. The panel will address these questions:
- How is the industry positioned to support growing development with existing assets and technology?
- What are the biggest challenges in pushing the wind energy sector forward, both in terms of policy and technology?
- How can India streamline and strengthen its transmission network, tariff regime and secure supply chain?
