Launch of the Clean Construction Pilot Project in Surat

WRI India, in collaboration with Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), and supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, recently developed the Surat Clean Air Action Plan (SCAP) and the ‘Handbook of Clean Construction Practices.’

Building construction is one of the leading sources of particulate matter emissions in Surat city. The ‘Handbook of Clean Construction Practices’ consists of all rules, regulations, mitigation actions, and best practices to reduce air pollution emissions from various on-site construction activities.

A pilot on-site is now being launched at Sangini Skyteria, Vesu, Surat with the aim of making the construction site the ‘Least Air Pollution Emissions Construction Project in India’. All mitigation measures suggested in the ‘Handbook of Clean Construction Practices’ will be implemented and its impact on ambient air quality at the case site (undertaking proposed mitigation measures) and a control site (no mitigation measures), covering all construction activities, will also be undertaken.

This study will serve as a novel benchmark for future construction projects by evaluating the impact of clean construction practices and ensuring an evidence-based approach for on-site dust control programs.

ITINERARY

  • Ribbon cutting by Ravjibhai Patel, Chairperson, CREDAI Surat
  • Training program by Sandeep Narang (Senior Advisor, Sustainable Construction, CGEM, Assocham) for CREDAI officials on mitigating emissions through sustainable construction practices
