Delhi Govt, WRI India sign MoU to redesign city roads

WRI India will provide technical assistance for the ambitious 540km road revamp project in Delhi

Delhi (July 20, 2021): The World Resources Institute (WRI) India Ross Centre entered an agreement with the Delhi government on Tuesday to provide technical assistance for the 540kms road revamp project in the national capital. As the technical arm/knowledge partner of the project, WRI India will support the Public Works Department (PwD) in the development of the ‘Complete Streets’ project.

In August 2020, Honorable Delhi chief minister, Shri. Arvind Kejriwal had announced the government’s plans to redesign 100-meter-wide roads in the capital at par with European cities. The redesign will help reduce bottlenecks, increase green cover, improve efficiency of the existing space on roads, create planned spaces for vehicles, non-motorised transport and widen footpaths for pedestrians.

More than 1,500 people are killed on Delhi roads every year owing to an increasing number of crashes. WRI India, a global research organisation, has been working with the Delhi Traffic Police to bring down crashes and fatalities by improving road design and providing accessible, safe infrastructure for all road users.
