Communication Resources for Reducing Food Loss and Food Waste

WRI India's Communication Resources for Reducing Food Loss and Food Waste is part of the Food, Land and Water program. Contact Shweta Prajapati for more details or media inquiries.

India loses an estimated 68.9 million metric tonnes of food after harvest every year, amounting to nearly INR 1.53 lakh crore in lost value (NABCONS, 2022). At the consumer end, India generates 78.2 million tonnes of food waste annually, making it the world's second-largest food waste generator (UNEP, 2024). reducing FLFW presents an opportunity to foster entrepreneurship, support women-led enterprises, and enable community-based innovations that create both environmental and socio-economic value. The scale and complexity of the challenge require collective action – from Hotels, Restaurants, and Catering (HoReCa) to communities and individuals.

To support this effort, WRI India has developed a suite of open-access communication resources that can help different audiences create awareness, encourage behaviour change, and drive action. Explore and download the toolkits below.

FOOD WASTE COMMUNICATION TOOLKIT FOR HORECA SECTOR

Ideal for: Hotels • Restaurants • Cafés • Caterers • Hospitality Associations

Why this toolkit?

The HoReCa sector plays an important role in reducing food waste not only by improving its own practices but also by influencing the everyday choices of millions of consumers. By engaging directly with their consumers, they can enable a large-scale behavioural shift among food consumers in India. To support these efforts, WRI India has developed the Food Waste Communication Toolkit for the HoReCa Sector, a ready-to-use collection of communication resources that helps HoReCa establishments promote responsible food consumption without having to create materials from scratch.
