India Can Grow While Reducing Its Emissions
Viksit Bharat by 2047. Net-zero emissions by 2070. With the right policy decisions, it can achieve both.
Take electricity generation. Between 2026 and 2050, energy demand for electricity is projected to rise by 284%. Yet emissions from the sector could be 74% lower than today under a long-term decarbonisation scenario.
And electricity is just one example. Across key sectors, emissions can fall even as energy demand grows to support India’s development.
These numbers come from WRI India’s Energy Policy Simulator (EPS) India, an interactive tool that lets users explore how different policy choices could shape emissions, energy use and other outcomes across electricity, transport, industry and more.
