India to have more educated population by 2070.pdf

India’s workforce is likely to become more educated over the coming decades. But will workers have the skills needed for the jobs emerging in a Net-Zero economy?

In 2024, around 30% of India’s working-age population (15–64 years) had completed 12 years of education or more. By 2070, this share is projected to rise to 44%, with women expected to see the largest gains in educational attainment.

At the same time, a Net Zero 2070 pathway could reshape labour demand across sectors.

Compared to a business-as-usual scenario, India could generate 3.4 million additional jobs by 2050. Most of these gains are projected to come from renewable electricity, green infrastructure construction and specialised manufacturing, while job losses are likely to be concentrated in fossil fuel-related sectors.

A just transition will depend not only on creating jobs, but also on ensuring workers, particularly women, who are projected to see the largest gains in education levels, are prepared for the opportunities emerging in a green economy.
