Value-chain Approach to Decarbonizing the Building and Construction Sector in India: Stakeholder Consultation

WRI India, in partnership with Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE), EcoCollab and Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited (MLDL), is organizing a four-part virtual stakeholders’ consultation on ‘Value-chain approach to decarbonizing the building and construction sector in India'.

The building and construction sector in India contributes 9% to the country’s GDP and employs more than 50 million people.

It also has a large and growing carbon footprint, according to IEA’s Stated Policies Scenario in India Energy Outlook 2021, India’s CO2 emissions from existing and new buildings are projected to grow from 194 MtCO2 in 2020 to 245 MtCO2 in 2040.

Reducing emissions from this sector requires disruptive new technologies because we do not yet have good alternatives to the emissions-intensive processes by which we produce materials like cement and steel. There is however, much that we can already do to use energy more efficiently and construct buildings more sustainably.

To limit global warming to 1.5°C, we need new projects in this sector to strive to become net-zero carbon in operations and significantly reduce embodied carbon. Urgent action by Indian stakeholders will be crucial to decarbonize the building and construction sector across its value-chain.

The main objective of these stakeholders’ consultations is to identify the priority actions and key opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the buildings and construction value chain in India, and to develop strategies to transition to a net zero carbon building and construction sector. Participation is by invitation only.
