Transport Sector Stakeholder Consultations | Session 02: Towards Decarbonization of Urban Transport in India

Rapid urbanization has led to a significant rise in travel demand, with passenger activity increasing by 267% during 2005-2015. Longer trip distances, increased share of private motorized transport, and declining share of public and non-motorized transport have resulted in increased congestion, deteriorating air quality and significant greenhouse gas emissions in urban areas.

India has, in the recent years, sought to decarbonize its urban transport sector through electrification, alternate fuels and efficient public transport systems. Upcoming policies must also focus on meeting the transport demand in an efficient manner while delivering environmental and developmental benefits. There is a need to further explore ‘avoid’ and ‘shift’ solutions such as transport demand management, shared mobility and non-motorized transport.
