Launch of On-Site Clean Construction Manual to Control Dust Emissions

Building construction is one of the leading sources of particulate matter emissions in Surat. As per the source apportionment study for the city, construction, along with road dust, contributes 25-38% and 33-59% of the total PM2.5 and PM10, respectively.

Considering the growth of the construction sector and its subsequent impact on ambient air quality in Surat, WRI India, in collaboration with Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) developed the ‘Handbook of Clean Construction Practices’ in November 2020, followed by the ‘Surat Clean Air Action Plan’ (SCAP) in December 2021. In continuation with these efforts, Surat is now launching the city’s first ‘On-site Clean Construction Manual’ based on this handbook.

Targeting construction sector stakeholders, the manual is being launched by WRI India in partnership with SMC, GPCB and the Surat chapter of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India’ (CREDAI). The manual, developed in Hindi and English, lays out dust and air pollution mitigation measures in a visual form for clear understanding of the engineers, supervisors, and workers at construction sites.

Along with the On-site Clean Construction Manual release, WRI India in partnership with the Surat Chapter of CREDAI, ICEA, SMC and GPCB will also conduct a ‘Capacity Building Programme on Dust Management from Construction Sites’ for Surat’s supersite engineers, contractors and workers.
