Inception Workshop: Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM)

The World Resources Institute (WRI) India is conducting an inception workshop on Landscape Restoration and the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology.

Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLR) is an integrated approach that seeks to ensure that forests, trees, and the functions that they provide are effectively restored, conserved, and employed on a landscape-scale to help secure ecological integrity and sustainable livelihoods. This involves multiple tree-based interventions in forests, agriculture and other land uses. Successful FLR implementation has the potential to increase carbon sequestration along with climate adaptation, support biodiversity conservation, enhance supplies of clean water as well as augment the sustainability of rural livelihoods.

ROAM is a dynamic, and affordable framework developed by WRI and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to identify and analyse landscape restoration potential at national and sub-national level. WRI India is adapting and implementing the ROAM in India, to map forest and landscape restoration potential, analyse opportunities and challenges to upscaling, identify costs and benefits of restoration interventions as well as understand existing restoration finance frameworks and gaps thereof. This is being done with the objective of developing pathways for FLR that facilitates improved resource governance, and generates gender equitable outcomes, particularly for local communities.

Over the two days the inception workshop will focus on:

  • Introducing the ROAM, and discussing methodological approaches to its various components
  • Prioritising landscapes for forest and landscape restoration
  • Showcasing and discussing experiences of FLR by state agencies, civil society and private sector
  • Identifying opportunities and challenges for scaling FLR, and developing strategies to address the constraints
  • Developing a 3 - 5 year action plan for upscaling FLR in India, with emphasis on partnerships and collaborations
