Participatory Scenario Development Workshop for Doddaballapur Residents

WRI India’s Climate Resilient Practice team facilitated a Participatory Scenario Development (PSD) workshop organised by Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) on 24th November, 2016. The objective of the workshop was to develop sustainable development scenarios for the betterment of Doddaballapur residents, under the project ‘Understanding the dynamic changes in India’s peri‐urban regions and building capacity and resilience in the context of urbanisation and climate change’ funded by IDRC.

The objective of the workshop was for participants to discuss two scenarios for the years 2025 and 2040. The discussions focused on food and water security in the face of changing climate conditions. Participants included the Municipal Commissioner of Doddaballapur, representatives from the water regulatory board and the department of ground water, small and large farmers, KIADB, labour unions and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

The presence of participants from various disciplines helped develop salient conversations. Participants noted twelve drivers of change including population growth, resource exploitation and poor governance in the water and sanitation sectors. The participants also discussed two scenarios - one where the taluk has proactive water governance under high population growth rate and one where the taluk has reactive water governance under high population growth rate. Through this process, participants made use of future climate projections, local experiences with communities and the government to visualise the two scenarios for 2025 and 2040.
