Intern/ Consultant – GHG Data Protocol
Climate change is the most important – and difficult -- collective action challenge facing humanity this century. Thanks to the Paris Climate deal and spectacular gains in technology and knowledge we are better equipped to address it today than at any time before. But we are not yet on track, and time is running out. Reaching the Paris goal of “well below 2 degrees” will require emissions to peak by 2020 or shortly thereafter, and to decline to net zero by the middle of the century. This in turn will require system-wide shifts of major proportions across most key spheres of economic and social life.
India is vulnerable to climate change because of its dense population, a vast coastline exposed to sea level rise, and the monsoon-dependent nature of its economy. A 2 degrees C rise in temperatures could make India’s monsoon unpredictable and affect India’s economic growth. It also faces development challenges such as poverty, rapid urbanization, and a lack of basic infrastructure. India urgently needs to innovate a new pathway of development that enriches the economy while cutting emissions of greenhouse gases.
WRI India is seeking an intern/ short-term consultant for “Data Portal for Cities” work housed in climate program in India. With his/her knowledge of GHG inventorization and overview of current climate dynamics, both at national and international level, the intern/ short-term consultant will support the vision of WRI and help the core climate team of WRI India in meeting the objective of GHG data portal project.

The Data Portal for Cities or “The Portal” is a new project launched by the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCOM) in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI). WRI will take the lead role in developing the requisite data architectures to support the development and delivery of The Portal. Intended to service communities in at least 21 countries by the end of 2019, the Portal will house activity data and emissions factors to enable municipalities to undertake a greenhouse gas inventory.
Globally, WRI has deep experience in the climate sector and is widely recognized as leader on climate issues. In India, we have a multi-pronged climate strategy that looks at directing our tools, research, expertise and partnerships in ensuring long term decarbonization driven by NDC enhancements and cohesive actions by non-state and subnational actors.
The intern/ short-term consultant will support the WRI India climate team with the following: • Work with the Climate team to research and assess the availability and quality of existing national or regional GHG activity data sets for key sectors like stationary energy, transportation and waste sector, emission factors, and other contextual data; • Understand the national inventory data system and translating or interpreting the data sets into meaningful analysis; • Work with the climate team by assisting in the computation, structuring, and quality control of country data sets as instructed core team for supporting data allocation methods and uploading into the data portal; • Assist the climate team in drafting, editing, and translating of data portal related products—e.g., data improvement guidance, web content, training materials. • Assist the climate team in delivering in-country trainings of data portal to target city groups and produce summary reports of attendance and collected user feedback from these events; • Assist the climate team on need-based basis.
Qualifications and Requirements
• Post-graduate in the related field of natural/environmental, economic or social sciences;
• Minimum 6 years (in case of short-term consultant) of demonstrated experience in climate domain working on GHG mitigation projects and/or assignments;
• Credible knowledge and understanding of GHG inventorization process based on international best practices like IPCC, GPC, etc.;
• Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative data analysis is a requirement;
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is a requirement;
• General awareness of environment and climate domain – key issues, events and updates;
• Excellent/ Strong research, interpersonal/ written/ communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to work both independently as well as part of a team;
• Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner;
• Ability to work calmly and enthusiastically under high pressure;
• Ability to think creatively.
